Kavala is amphitheatrically built — the kind of city where every street eventually leads either up to the fortress or down to the water. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, home to the Philippus archaeological site, museums, and a cultural life that has always been shaped by the passage of people, ideas, and civilizations.
The Mediterranean light here is particular. It changes hour by hour. The sounds of the neighborhood — conversations from balconies, the rhythm of the market, the sea — become the ambient material of your three weeks. The city doesn't let you be a tourist. It invites you to be a resident.
This is the place where Eutopia began. It remains the flagship — the longest program, the most open, the one that most fully embodies the philosophy of time, place, and community without hierarchy.
Kavala is Eutopia's most open program. There are no scheduled sessions or mandatory workshops. You wake up, you go to the studio or the sea or the old town. You work when you feel it. You rest when you need to. The city provides everything else.
Thassos island (40 min by boat). The ancient theatre of Philippus. Museum visits. Local artist studio tours. Workshops with artists from the region. These are offered, not imposed — you decide what pulls you.
The program closes with a group exhibition, event, and celebration with music — open to citizens, fellow artists, publishers, and collectors. Artworks created during the residency are showcased. One representative piece from each artist joins the Eutopia Collection.
On group activities: None are mandatory. You decide how much time to spend on activities. We encourage participation as an opportunity to develop connections and experiences — but the choice is always yours. Activities are not Eutopia policing your time. They are Eutopia offering openings.
No funding available from Eutopia directly. We can provide an invitation letter for you to use with funding organisations in your country.
Both are 350m from the sea, in the city center. Choose based on how you like to live — more private and self-contained, or more communal with shared kitchen and living.

"What I appreciated the most was that there was no pressure to create, and no expectations for presenting work. The program directors were incredibly attentive to our needs as human beings first. This structure made me crave creation. I produced some of my best work."
"Frankly, the experience all round was so great for us that we wouldn't change anything. The studio and gallery was perfect for rapidly producing an exhibition appropriate to the space. The support I received personally was outstanding."
"We were so happy to have the chance to discover Kavala. One of the best parts were the people. It was nice to learn about the Greek art scene, the issues you deal with, the great ideas and beautiful designs."
"My first published interview featured work completed at Eutopia. I am so grateful for the opportunity and focus of the residency, and thank you so much for all of your support."
None. Eutopia Kavala focuses on research, knowledge sharing, and experience with other artists and the local area. There are no required results, no minimum portfolio requirements, and no specific discipline restrictions.
At Byron House, yes — you can bring a partner or friend for an additional €400. At Skra House, visitors are not permitted due to the shared-bathroom communal nature of the space.
If Eutopia cancels the program, advance payments are refunded in full. If you cancel, advance payments are non-refundable. However, if your spot is filled from the waitlist, you have the right to attend the following year. If you cancel in time and a replacement is found, we work with you.
There is no meal plan. Both houses have fully equipped kitchens. There are large supermarkets and street markets nearby for fresh local products. A restaurant by the sea is 300m away, and pizzerias and breakfast delivery are 50m away. Many residents cook together — it becomes part of the community rhythm.
Danai can help you source equipment locally or connect you with local artists and makers who might have what you need. The studio has basic tools and leftover materials from previous residents. Specialized materials are your responsibility to bring or source.
Three slots still available for 2026. Apply now — we read every application personally and respond within a week.
